HELEN WHITING NEILL JOHNSON -- Helen Neill, 69, passed away in her home on Plot Road, Johnson, on April 18, 2001. She was born October 14, 1931 in Lake Crystal, Minn., the daughter of Zach and Ellen (Fisher) Whiting. In December, 1956, she was married to Kenneth H. Niell of Johnson. After graduating from Cambridge High School, she attended Burlington Business College and was later employed by Burlington Grocery Company for several years. She served the town of Johnson for over thirty years, first as an auditor then as Assistant Town Clerk, and as Town Clerk and Treasurer for twelve years, retiring in 1999. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Neill, and three sons, David and his wife, Joyce, of New Milford, Conn., Shawn of Highgate, and Kevin and his wife, Monita, of Milton; seven grandchildren, Bethany, Alyssa, Zachariah, Catherine, Anna, Zachary and Nikayla; four sisters, Marion Locke of Waterville, Lois Tatro of Quechee, Mildred Sargent of Johnson, Alice Whiting of Johnson; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Zach and Ellen Whiting, and one brother, Arthur Whiting. Throughout her life, Helen enjoyed her family, including summer gatherings in York Beach, Maine, and a variety of handicrafts such as knitting, rug braiding, and quilting. She also took pleasure and pride in her many associations with the people of the Johnson community. The family will receive friends Sunday April 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the des Groseilliers Funeral Home, Main St., Johnson. Services will be Monday, April 23, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Interment in May will be in Lamoille View Cemetery, Johnson. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Helen's memory may be made to the Lamoille Home Health and Hospice, 54 Farr Avenue, Morrisville, Vt. 05661 or to the American Cancer Society, New England Division Inc., Lamoille Unit, P.O. Box 397, Montpelier, Vt. 05601. Arrangements are under the direction of DesGroseilliers Funeral Home, Johnson.
